needs to be fixed:

in Expansion, the translation for the first 没戏 sentence

他们队没戏了！

is missing. the translation under this sentence belongs to the second sentence (and the second translation, to the third sentence).

changye,   i wasn't really thinking about demographics--see bendidelaowai's comment. i guess what i mean is, if young people imagine it's hard now they ought to realize it's going to get truly difficult later on.

and before you go running out to seize opportunities, have some compassion!  you married ones especially--don't be exacerbating the poor Chinese guys' plight!

btw at what age is a woman in China these days considered a 老姑娘, if at all?

changye, thanks very much for further clarifying 借代/借喻.

In the case of 貂锦 in this poem, the word indicates 貂裘锦衣 (marten leather and embroidered clothes) ancient Chinese soldiers wore, which has the same relationship between "红领巾" and "少先队员". So it belongs to 借代, but not 借喻.

我不明白--年轻人怎么找不到女（男）朋友呢？  i understand older people needing places like this to meet potential partners. but if you're young and living in a reasonably populated area there have to be opportunities everywhere, no?

changye, i guess you're right about 去掉化妆, the 去掉 in relation to cosmetics and makeup seem, as you said, to be mostly about concealing blemishes such as moles, bags under the eyes etc--making them disappear.  so you probably wouldn't say 去掉化妆.

removing makeup:

卸妆    xièzhuāng   (i guess this can mean removing "adornments" including accessories)

去掉化妆    qùdiào huàzhuāng

both seem to be good

hmm i know. poems with pete @chinesepod is a unique place. i couldn't sit in on a discussion like this in any class where i live, certainly not in English, with this many people. very valuable and stimulating thanks to all

ok now i'm looking at my one of my bound dictionaries （東方書店's 東方中国語辞典）. what that gives me is (pls excuse my translations):

借代:  referring to something not directly, but by substituting w/an associated word, such as

金乌 jīnwū to refer to the sun (from the myth that there is a three-legged golden crow in the sun)    玉兔 yùtù to refer to the moon (from the mythical rabbit that lives on the moon)

借喻:   fig of speech such as

不要随便给别人扣帽子     you can't just go calling people criminals / speaking of others as having ill repute

帽子 màozi  referring to a label of some crime or ill repute   扣 kòu being to hang or slap (such a sign on someone)

... which seems to differ from what 百度百科 says, but as my source is Japanese it certainly seems silly to assume that it's more authoritative.  and tellingly, in the 東方中国語辞典 i can't find entries for 转喻 or 换喻。

pete, it wasn't really an arduous journey as i was hopping like i said, albeit in a circuitous route.  i know what i really need to start using is a good 中-中辞典.
