January 14, 2008 at 2:16 AMTsuchiyayoshihiro: It should be pronounced Tiao1 Ti (Tiao is 1st tone, Ti is Neutral tone). I think alot of the time is the speaker is not a Northerner, then their pronunciation of the neutral tone is too long and too harsh so it ends up sounding like 4th tone. By the way in the dialogue Jenny said, "It's a vicious cycle", maybe Amber or someone could let me know a proper translation for this common but particularly colloquial phrase?

January 13, 2008 at 10:13 PMTvan: I think most Chinese people don't call a Computer a ,"计算机", it might be better to say, "电脑"。 Also your post said “大不开", that 大 is the word for "big" or "great", the word you want is "打" it's easy to remember though, it makes perfect sense because the radical on the left hand side is the "Hand" radical 手， which would imply and action done by the hands, especially in ancient times where opening something was always an action done by the hands! Similarly is the word "把" which the basic meaning is, "to grasp, to hold", or to imply "an action being beformed with the hands", also in the combination 把手，which is the noun "Handle". Also in the sentence structure 把+O (object)+TV (transitive verb), which is that confusing structure that John so aptly explains as being somewhat equivalent to our "Take this (Object)....and (perform an action with it) EG: take this letter and put it on the boss's desk. Here's that example in Chinese, 把这封信放在老板的写字台上 Actually breaking down the characters by their visual components is a great way to remember them, because they always contain visual clues to the meaning and the sound.

Actually it's not really that hard, if you curl your tongue and say the word "yuh" behind the rolled tongue, then you get really close. It's the same for "Ren" 人 (person), the "R" sound is actually a "Y" sound behind the rolled tongue. Try saying "Yen" with your tongue rolled and it will get you in the ballpark. Most American's make the mistake of saying our "R" sound behind the rolled tongue and it gives you an accent.

January 11, 2008 at 2:09 AMheruilin, In this collocation the aspect particle 了paired with the 最。。。了 and often paired with 太。。。了 and appears for emphasis. It has many different uses, not just to indicate an action has been completed. I will admit when I first started studying Chinese that was very confusing to me since the dictionary and texbooks denote it as the particle to indicate the completion of an action.

Remember the 得 is the word that compliments the degree of 做。 Which I know is kind of confusing so here are a few examples to help clear it up. 她做的菜太淡了，不好吃 (The dishes she made were too bland, they don't taste good.) 她做的菜做得太淡了，不好吃。(The dishes she made were made to taste too bland, they don't taste good.) Here the 得 is complimenting the degree of 做。 Here is another example. 他开车， 开得太慢了 (He drives too slow.) Here the 得 is complimenting how slow he is driving. Or here is another one, 他家里的家具摆得很乱了。 （The furniture in his house has been arranged sloppily。） 你，明白吗？
