July 5, 2010 at 9:17 AMRight, so this would be a challenge for a first lesson, but as you tried lesson after lesson, you'd hear the same vocab cropping up, and it would start to take shape. I think John's translation in recent Intermediates really helps with this, but I do have to be careful not to blank out what Jenny says and just listen to the translation.
You're probably right, but everyone uses a dictionary now and then. Plus, so long as key vocabulary sinks in, 100% comprehension of the discussion isn't actually necessary. If you want to understand absolutely everything that's said in every lesson, you're probably right.

July 5, 2010 at 8:54 AMIt is a lot, and I do see what you're doing. However as I understand it, the chinesepod "method" is based around phrases being repeated lesson after lesson so they settle into your internal dictionary by osmosis.
I wonder how many of those words did John translate, and how many of them are repeated from previous lessons.

July 5, 2010 at 8:18 AMAh, she replied, but didn't comment on Rebecca's location. I guess it's just one of those mysteries :) Let us know if you ever drop by, Rebecca!

July 2, 2010 at 10:55 AMI'm kind of interested in Amber's assertion here (2 years ago!) that 书呆子 doesn't have a negative connotation. It certainly does when Yang Jie uses it in her diary in an earlier lesson:
"但是我们班的男生太丑了,都是书呆子。"
dànshì wǒmen bān de nánshēng tài chǒu le, dōu shì shūdāizi
"but our classmates are too ugly. They're all bookworms"
Seems pretty negative.

July 2, 2010 at 9:12 AMThat would really really annoy me. Thank god England has the preferential telephone list - you enter your number on a website, and *bing* no more spam calls, no more spam texts :)
