September 25, 2008 at 6:31 AMIt seems like they've been cracking down a lot since I used to go several times a week. Used to pool together a group and go there to play LAN games as it is far easier than arranging everything ourselves.
I've been to several where you can get take-out food delivered and they routinely come around to give more tea. I even went to one where you can pay extra to have a masseuse to massage your arms and shoulders! Funny stuff.
As a seperate addition, I've been seeing quite a lot of hair salons with computers popping up. I've checked them out a few times. You enter and sit down and use the computer as they wash your hair and such.

September 25, 2008 at 6:11 AMGood lesson.
Now if I could only get through the options to actually top-up my phone instead of getting someone else to do it!
I've been one of the lucky ones who has only gone through SIM cards, not phones. I keep moving from one city to another city within China. Does there happen to be a way to convert a number for a different locale? (Instead of buying a new number as I have been doing)

September 24, 2008 at 3:28 AMI work at a Chinese online game company and wow... talk about abbreviations for everything. Reading the department's QQ-like (stolen) chat room can be so confusing at times.
A common one I come across that wasn't mentioned was "PS" for photoshop. It is also used as a Verb.
把这个图PS一下。
This company also decided to make up abbreviations for English words since they didn't want to design a new interface for the English versions of the games. Though, problems that can arise include buttons or options that can't possibly fit an English word.
Example, PW for password. I was confused on that one for awhile. I get asked questions like "What is a shorter word for "Edit" (replacing the existing "改" in the Chinese version)
The other trend that I have trouble with is that sometimes they take the first pinyin letter from a Chinese word to abbreviate it. So while I spend a while trying to figure out what English word they are referring to it turns out to be CHINESE!
Examples: MM(美眉)=girl , GG(哥哥)=guy, TMD (他妈的)= swearing...
Also seem to use the same method to write about co-workers in a less obvious way. 成龙 would be CL. (I love Jacky Chan)
I can't think of any other ones at the moment but I'll keep my eyes peeled for more and post them at some other point for those that are interested.

September 23, 2008 at 8:26 AMI usually don't post but I keep up with them as my questions are usually already answered but I should start participating...
As a general question to maybe Changye and hitokiri6993 or others: What are your thoughts on one learning Japanese at the same time as Chinese?
I have been toying witht the idea for awhile but I'm just worried I may start confusing myself too much.

September 5, 2008 at 8:37 AMOh this is great! I went to Vietnam last summer for a month and I can say one thing that is missing is the impossible traffic! (Though one may guess from the background noise)
Scariest moment of my life was when my friend and I got on the back of one such 摩托车. We were hanging on for dear life as we were driven by a local 13 km through Hanoi traffic to a place to drink the famous 'bia ahoi' (Fresh beer). Suffice it to say we decided to refuse the offer of a lift back to our hostel. Though, after Chinese beer 'bia ahoi' is delicious.
Highly recommend: Never ride as 3 people on a small motorcyle
Hanoi beer (Hanoi too...)

September 25, 2008 at 6:38 AMI have to say this lesson helped pull me through a bad day at the office. haha. Especially since a co-worker and I were pitching an idea to the boss about a Pirates vs. Ninjas online multiplayer game recently. (Denied of course... wouldn't want to have a good game come from this company for once...*read with a great deal of spite*)
I also thought it was good to know that "teaching someone a lesson" could be so directly phrased...
Anyway, thanks for the laugh!
