Didn't want to eat the cheese because it smelled bad.  Spoken by a culture that eats stinky tofu?????

We had some Yak cheese in Li Jiang on our last trip to Yunnan. The tase was fabulous not to mention Yak Yogurt. Recommend it highly.

There is a reason that the Chinese don't eat fresh vegetables and that has to do with the extensive use of night soil as fertilizer in the past. Eating raw vegetables was an easy way to get sick - gastritis.

Green onions are also called scallions.

Why should organic foods cost more. You are removing pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizer which are the most expensive part of growing fruits and vegetables. Also a farmm is not truly organic unless it can protect itself from winds blowing chemicals from the neighbor who is using chemicals. The produce is not organic.

I have a Masters degree in Chinese Intellectual History and Philosophy of the Modern Period.  Unfortunately when I got the degree, the Pre-Normalization PRC was off limits to US students, particularly those studying Chinese Intellectual History of the 20th Century.  My particular interest was in 陳獨秀 and the May Fourth Movement.  I think still a sensitive topic.

I have visited Xian several times. We also went to the Muslim district to eat. We had the yangrou paomo and kao yang rou. By the way you can pound nails with the bread it is so hard. Anyway at the end of the meal the fuwuyuan brought over a large container of pickled garlic. We were puzzled as to why. We asked and she said: "Many Xian people don't like lamb breath so she said we eat the garlic to hide the smel"l. Since I like garlic anyway we ate quite a few.

I still don't get the romanization???  The phonetics don't match the spoken in my mind.  Is there a pronunciation guide somewhere?

I'm assuming in a pinch you can use "yao" for just about everything?

I visited Chinesepod in 2008 and felt quite welcome but Jenny and John were not there.  I met Amber who has since moved on.  It is true they welcome CPers with open arms and I must say are very proud of their facilities.  The tour was insightful in may ways and I was able to witness a Spanishpod session while I was there.  I really enjoyed the visit and will go again when I am in Shanghai.  I recommend it highly whenever any of you are in Shanghai.
