Jenny, I do have a female security guard at my building in Hong Kong and, interestingly enough, she works the night shift.

Some of my Chinese friends took me to a durian dessert restaurant in Sai Kung in the New Territories near Hong Kong.  Everyone ordered a different durian dessert.  Unfortuately, I didn't enjoy any of them, no matter how they were prepared.  But everyone else loved the place!

I agree with rjberki, there is a lot more sex going on in China than this Dear Amber alluded to.  A typical business dinner may include escorts that are much more than just dinner partners, many married men have "little wives" that they support with apartments and sometimes even children, and then there is that ubiquitous female caller every evening in your hotel room.  More surprising to me is that the married women I know seem to know what is going on, but as long as their husband is discreet and supporting them well, they look the other way.  They all say it is part of the culture.

Last summer my son, who was 16, volunteered to teach English in Xi'an. In the evenings the group of volunteers would go to the boa fang to chang ge. My son really enjoyed himself there. He said the karaoke clubs were really quite nice and quite reasonably priced. I wonder why they are not so popular in the west.

In Singapore they seem to always add a "la" on the end of things, for example "OK la". Is this the same "la"? I even saw a funny sign in a store window saying "Sale la".

This lesson explains s lot about why I am so confused when I listen to real people speaking Chinese. And by real people, I don't mean that Jenny isn't real. She's just so perfect. I wish everyone spoke that clearly. But they don't. Actually, I found it easier to understand people in Taiwan for some reason, but not so easy to understand your guest speaker. Even the radio in Taipei seemed slower and more precise than when I go to the mainland. I could catch a few words. The s vs sh always throws me though. That was a great lesson and I would appreciate more of these. Just having a dialog read in the various accents would help train my ear a bit I think. And that ear needs a lot of training, its true!

I sometimes tell my husband, "It was so cheap I can't afford not to buy it." Can I say “价格那么便宜, 我非买不可” ?

It is such a coincidence that I ran into this sentence construction yesterday while I was studying the Chinese Wedding Customs lesson. This construction was in the expansion exercises: 等你结婚的时候,我们非好好闹一闹洞房不可。 (Wait until you get married--we'll have to make sure to do a lot of hazing of the newlyweds.)
