１）A simple usage:-
他起来得很早 ＝ he got up very early
2) Used as a complement after a verb:--
a) to indicate beginning / continuation of an action
天气冷起来了= It is getting cold
b) completion of an action
我想起来了 = I remembered
c) Indicates impression made:--
听起来 ，看起来 ＝listened , noticed
d) indicates an upward movement:--
旗举起来 = raised a flag

July 5, 2010 at 7:31 PMRegarding 垃圾 :---Dictionary meaning is --garbage, disposal, rubbish,
refuse.
垃圾箱 ( la ji xiang ) obviously means garbage can or dustbin.
一堆垃圾 ( yi dui la ji ) would be a heap of garbage.
I feel it is reffered to inanimate objects. But in contexts like : " you talk rubbish", la ji can be used.

verb ( 看 ).
To give another example :--- 我 买 到 那 本 书。

July 1, 2010 at 8:36 PMI fully agree with xiao hu. You MUST make a habit of studying Chinese every day--- as a routine programme ---minimum for one hour. It could be reading/ writing/ speaking ( atleast with your own image in a mirror ).
In my opinion Chinese language is an unfathomable ocean. More you study more it would be easy.

向上 means -- upward , make progress.
Therefore 天天向上 ，could mean " make progress everyday ".

"shuang" means pair and that is the measure word used for - a pair of spectacles, a pair of shoes etc.
