i have to say to everyone, don't be scared to take the HSK -- only good things can happen!

i took the HSK basic last year in the US, and i remember them mentioning a scholarship, which i thought nothing of at the time. fast-forward to this april, when i received a phone call stating i had won an HSK scholarship to study in dalian for one month. i will be there in a couple of weeks. :)

so i definitely think it was worth the agony.

Great lesson! A couple of four-character expressions I found for being afraid of everything: 怕前怕后 (pàqián pàhòu) 怕三怕四 (pàsān pàsì) Amber: 冰球运动员也不怕痛！ :)

changye, thanks for the explanation of 金 as king/kim/kin! on many signs in los angeles (sorry if i offend anyone with my reference to the u.s.; i don't want to be branded a cultural imperialist again), 金 is romanized as "kim." for example, 金龙 is romanized as "kim long." i always wondered why.

leeinengland, i do believe i qualified my comments with "at least to these american eyes and ears"; in no way was i implying that american english is the norm. i'm sorry if you felt offended. it looks like a lot of people are getting their knickers in a twist over various comments in this discussion, and all i can say is: this thread was started on valentine's day, so show your fellow cpoddies a little love!

casie, sushan is right, the word mentioned for 小气鬼 is "cheapskate"; you could also say, "tightwad "or "cheapo." the other words you listed in your post are out of date, at least to these american eyes and ears; and while "niggard" is correct, it sounds so close to another n-word that it's better to avoid it altogether, so people won't misunderstand. (but then i have said some horrible things in chinese by mistake too .. .we won't talk about that right now.:) ) 祝大家情人节快乐！

Though not as popular as the NBA, the NFL seems to be a fairly big deal among 华侨 (huáqiáo, overseas Chinese) in the U.S. -- 超级碗 is a big topic on Mandarin radio and in the sports sections of the Chinese newspapers here in Los Angeles. During the regular season, some Chinese-language newspapers print the point spreads for all the NFL games on the front page. PS: Please consider a lesson on the Stanley Cup when ice hockey season comes to a close in late May/early June. I think Amber could help with that one :)
