I did a one month stint as a volunteer last year using most of my annual vacation from work. I went under the auspices of Global Volunteer Network and paid for the privilege. I imagine it would be difficult to find paid employment for just one month.

I made a hash of the 'teaching' which was arranged by GVN, at a junior school (xiaoxue) in Yantai, Shandong Province, but got a lot out of a genuine 'Chinese' experience and would recommend it to anyone of any age (I was 62 at the time).

Hope this is of some help.

Billm,

Thanks for the suggestion.

Another question: if you say "tai pianyi le" would the dumbfounded vendor just stare at you and let you get away?

Would "bu xiang" be a softer alternative to "bu yao", which might be considered too abrupt in some circumstances?

Amber - sorry to be pedantic, can I take the liberty of correcting your spelling mistake (English that is, not Chinese). The plural of storey is storeys, not stories.

Sorry to come so late to this discussion but hope my contribution is useful. Why is xiaojie (Miss) always written xiao(3)jie when it is pronounced xiao(2)jie. This is misleading for beginners.
