Of course when I read what you wrote, before reading your last line, and since you said you were on a bus, I had assumed he was asking you what place you were going to. Usually I always here 哪里 in one form or another (哪儿 nǎr，哪个地方nǎgedìfāng，哪国nǎguó，哪国家nǎguójiā) when asked where I'm from. Sure he wasn't asking you where you were getting off the bus? But yes, 什么地方 can also be asking where you're from, yet I'd also say you would often hear 来lái at the end of it, yet I don't know what he had already said to you/asked you, as context is always important.

April 18, 2012 at 4:55 AMI had a friend go to Korea a few months ago and did want her to bring back Kimchee chocolates, as she had finally convinced me they were real, but she wasn't able to find it, but did find chilli-pepper flavored chocolates... a tad spciy but not much...but yeah, amazing there are such products and they sell!
