March 17, 2008 at 11:48 PMand I could probably add that (no offence to the Podders) you probably know ten times as much about relativity as they do, just as they know more about pedadogy than I do. And I have my own area of expertise, we can't blame them for being "borderline inaccurate" in subspecialty areas.

The lesson is just a taster, a window into an area of specialist language and I found it really fascinating.

March 1, 2008 at 7:54 PMIf you think it was bad in 1988 being tailed/stared at, imagine what it was like in 1977 when I went to Beijing with my dad! In the middle of February no less. We didn't see any non-Chinese the whole time. But even in 1990 when we went back and travelled all through China everyone was very interested in us. I'll take my own son next year but this time we'll speak Mandarin (xie xie Chinesepod!!)

There are thousands of Jews still living, or their descendants who spent time in China. My uncle was there as a small child, and my grandfather spent 10 years there. He could speak 上海话 to some extent and visiting his old neighbourhood in Shanghai was one reason I became so interested in Chinese culture and language.
