January 12, 2013 at 4:53 AM阀 (fá ) is supposed to be a loan word for valve, but it doesn't sound much like valve to me. And yes, if you said "diverter valve" I don't think English speakers would know what you were talking about either. By the way, the dictionary I used is The Facts On File English / Chinese Visual Dictionary. Great for technical terms, I think. I don't have any insight into how accurate it is in terms of actual usage. Probably a lot of the words are quite obscure or specialized.

January 10, 2013 at 5:33 AMsince I have been a frequent complainer about the technology glitches, in fairness let me take this opportunity to agree with you that Chinese Pod is a great service and I have improved my listening comprehension tremendously from my long term subscription. I could have done more if I had taken advantage of all the exercises and grammar pointers that come with each lesson, but for the minimal effort I have put in CPod has helped me leverage it a lot. The ability to use Skritter with the CPod vocabulary lists and the CPod iOS mobile app (bug-infested as it is) are also big benefits for me. Keep it up, CPod!

Shower head / shower nozzle: 莲蓬头 (this is different from the word I learned on Cpod: 花洒 )
Diverter valve 分流阀 (This is the thing in a tub / shower combo that shifts the water from the tub to the shower head)

December 20, 2012 at 5:13 AMI think it's pronounced "KAHD-ray" and it means a local party boss, such as the village leader. I have seen this word a lot in talking about Chinese power structures. Was it in this lesson? What is the Chinese?

December 20, 2012 at 4:32 AMIt sounds like you are worried about wasting time on lessons that are too easy. Why not go up a level to where lessons are mostly "too hard" and the give yourself a break from time to time by picking the "easy" lessons that deal with topics you are most interested in? That way if you only pick up one or two useful words you may feel it was worth doing. CPod was originally designed to be "top down" and function based, not a course to be worked through level by level, so I would take the level categorization with a grain of salt. Good luck!

January 12, 2013 at 10:13 PMNo, 玩 is not used for 太极拳. One does not 玩太极拳, but rather 打太极拳 or 练太极拳。 You would probably choose " 打 " to describe a two-person exercise and " 练 " to describe a group of senior citizens practicing in the park.
