Does it simply mean "by"? In other words, does in not mean that she depends on it for her income, or imply that she earns more from selling the cosmetics than she does as a flight attendant? And would the sentence still be grammatically correct without 靠?

Aren't they the same? When I look up 赅括 it says "see 概括". If you cite where in the podcast you heard it (minutes and seconds) maybe someone can give you a definitive answer based on the tones, since they are not the same for the two different versions (at least not in the dictionary entry, which may not reflect actual usage).

It is a rule (or was a rule) that comments for newbies should include pinyin. At the elementary level, I agree with you that we can't be expected to sight-read everything, but there are enough on-line tools (mouse-over pop up dictionaries, cut and paste into MDBG.net, etc.) that a little effort on the reader's part will probably be fruitful and take less time than it would for the writer to make the comment a second time in pinyin. I have used both Zhongwen popup for Chrome and Mandarin Popup for Firefox with satisfactory results.

I have also heard 慢走. To my understanding, this would be said by a host to a departing guest. It does not mean that the guest should walk slowly (because of slippery ice, or whatever) but rather that the host is sorry to see the guest depart. I think the idiomatic equivalent in English would be when I tell a friend who is leaving my home "come back when you can stay longer."

Actually I think other users have mentioned that it works if you are the first person starting a new thread, but not if you are replying. I hope CPod will put some thought into fixing this breakdown of their system. Future development of new features is nice, but a little maintenance is in order sometimes. Casual perusal of requests by other customers suggests that the chance of any request for customer service receiving any attention at all is not high. But sometimes they do actually get around to fixing things. I pointed out the increased amount of spam quite some time ago, and they are purportedly looking into the spam filtering now.

If not I'm hosed, because the reply I just posted shows up as being posted "1 hour ago" and no possibility of deleting or editing it. I wish CPod would fix this bug and restore the editing function that was there before. I know that we are merely customers, and the tech team is really busy, but . . . .
