Hi johns,

You are really too kind.

Hi bababardwan

Here's some interesting background info about Double Ninth Festival. I don't see any mention of 阳 looking like "nine," though.

It seems the traditional idea was that the number nine inherently had too much masculine, bright energy (阳气).

Still, whatever helps you learn!

I wonder if one day we will be dissecting live human clones. They're not real people, right?

Hi bababardwan and miantiao

I'm late to the party, but it looks like you guys were crafting some memorable rhymes here!

I wonder if Chinese schoolchildren a thousand years from now will be reciting them...

Hi all

Here's today's poem.

故人具鸡黍,邀我至田家。

gùrén jù jīshǔ , yāo wǒ zhì tiánjiā

绿树村边合,青山郭外斜。

lǜshù cūnbiān hé , qīngshān guōwàixiá

开轩面场圃 ,把酒话桑麻。

kāixuān miàn chǎngpǔ , bǎjiǔ huà sāngmá

待到重阳日,还来就菊花。

dàidào chóngyángrì , huánlái jiù júhuā

Hi urbandweller

The poddies thrive on too much information! They only get upset when they don't get enough information ;-)

Hi everett

The 蒙 is third tone.

And I just noticed your bootlegging adventure today, RJ. Priceless.

When I was in high school I started reading the Foxfire books, full of Appalachian wisdom. There's a lot of folk wisdom in those books.

When the New World Economic order comes crashing down, we'll be happy for all the bathtub suds we can get.

As an American I am always secretly envious of my European friends with their mens' hand-bags. They keep your water, maps, books, and camera very handy.

But as a 纯爷们儿 (chúnyéménr) I just can't make the leap.

Hi mudphud

Thanks for a good question.

Changye's explanation is correct, but jiaojie also adds that, if someone says something you don't understand, you can omit the 了. You say "你说什么” but there is the implication of 你说了什么.

These expansion sentences are difficult because we don't know what the background is.

Hi johnball66

The left link below the lesson introduction is to a video, on the Chinese service youku. And the link on the right is to some classic lines from the show.
