November 22, 2008 at 10:14 PMTo all:
There is absolutely no reason to personally attack or mock the other poddies, or the CPod employees.
We have always welcomed vigorous discussion and suggestions.
But this is a neighborly community, and we are going to keep it that way.

Well said. And bababardwan, keep your comments coming. I think plenty of poddies benefit from your questions and contributions.
I'd also like to thank jackfrombelgium for raising good points in a respectful way. Your ideas are duly noted, and though we may not be able to implement them right away, as lessons are recorded far in advance, it's essential for us to hear what poddies want and need.

November 22, 2008 at 5:06 AMHi changye and penhuizc
I basically agree with Changye about the reasons for the choice of 基 over 鸡.
One other is suggested by many Americans: a few years ago, when Kentucky Fried Chicken started calling itself KFC, it was said to be due to a federal law requiring truth in advertising. Whatever meat they were selling was indeed fried, and might have been from Kentucky, but could not truthfully be called "chicken." ;-0

feedback or static is 杂音 za2yin1
So your sentence would be:
那个麦克风有杂音。
The acoustics here are really bad.
这儿音响效果很不好。(yin1xiang3xiao4guo3)
And finally, as a field of study, acoustics is 声学. In this sense, Chinese is very logical. Here are a few other 学:
数学 math
生物学 biology
人类学 anthropology
etc.

November 21, 2008 at 7:55 AMHi christudent , dukbludvermicelysoop , camson ,

November 21, 2008 at 5:30 AMHi changye, pinkjeans,
So glad you liked the lesson. It is frighteningly realisitic. The only way to make it even more accurate would be for the two aunties to shout in Shanghainese and then look at the guy expecting a response.
Hi weijin
她们虽然很可怕,但没那么离谱呀!

Yes, the lunar calendar is indeed useful for farming. American calendars also mark the phases of the moon. But I don't think many people care that much.
Also, you can still get the Old Farmer's Almanac and other such publications in America. Maybe the most famous was Poor Richard's Almanacke, which made founding father Benjamin Franklin famous.
I'm curious to hear from poddies in other countries-- are there still almanacs, those books full of farming wisdom, proverbs, etc.? Or are they a thing of the past?

How on earth did you get the chance to walk around Pudong in the seventies? I am envious.
Each video's introduction says what level it is, but maybe this is not clear enough.
