February 10, 2009 at 4:54 AMThanks as always for a great thought provoking selection and also for all the translations. Ambiguity, it plagues me, I want to be able to ask a long ago poet, "What did you mean when you said...did you really mean to leave us hanging? Is this the human condition? Or was it me who just couldn't put together your clues or settle on one possible meaning." In this poem I'd like to ask Li Bai what he expected might come of a meeting out there beyond the Milky Way. Would such a cosmic realm change conditions and allow shadow and moon a chance to share their own true thoughts and feelings? Is this poem about true lonliness or potential depth conversation? I think I'd enjoy the conversation...If only I could talk to Li Bai, out there beyond the stars...

February 3, 2009 at 5:35 AMI'm for keeping Baker Street because its Pete. Additionally, its jazz and Chinese poetry is jazz. It slices across centuries and oceans and lays down a visceral groove from that time and place that we can relate to in this time and place. I'd like to think that's how people will hear great jazz a thousand some years from now, but maybe that's a little too like 贺知章 wishing his village would know something of him even after all these years. Pete, keep laying down those grooves with your, "See ya on the flip side."

January 27, 2009 at 3:45 AMA good selection Pete. There are so many good-bye/sendoff poems in the Tang. It speaks to the valuing of good friends. But I wonder if it got old/routinized...and besides, at a certain point, did they have top the other poems , so as to let the friend that you are currently sending off know that you valued him even more than the last?

This is a great addition to ChinesePod and a great way to end a wonderful day. Pete, you have always been so very good about responding to people's questions, so there was a hidden advantage in listening and reading the comments tonight (morning for you). Thank you for your persistence in answering so many questions. Again, the virtue of ChinesePod as a collective community is shining through with Changye and others contributing too.

February 10, 2009 at 5:15 AMIf shadow and moon could talk out there beyond the Milky Way, they could tell you a thing or two. The shadow knows your every move, (well maybe not in the dark); and the moon has the big picture perspective. But I do agree, ambiguity does keep us going...it got me going on and on about a possibility that Li Bai may never have even considered but I entertained.
