The name billiards in England refers to a game with just three balls played on a full size snooker table.  You have a red ball, a white ball, and a white ball with a spot.  Each player takes one of the whites as his/her 'motherball'.  You score by potting balls, going in off, and scoring canons (hitting the other two balls).  I think it has lost popularity now as it became to easy to make huge breaks for good players.

Snooker of course reigns supreme in UK, the home of the best in the world.
