March 7, 2009 at 9:55 AMActually I can usually figure out the literal meaning by myself - by looking up words in dictionaries for example.
So I prefer that Chinesepod gives us the figurative, as I find that I can't always get to it myself. Often there may be similar seeming expressions in English and Chinese but their connotations can be quite different.

When I saw the title of this qingwen, my heart sank. Last week the show was frankly poor, and it has lost its interest, sparkle, focus ....
Does Chinesepod want us to suggest topics? I get the impression not, as per last week's reluctance to tell us how to say 'to take off'
There seems to be more of a drakonian (is that the right word, or spelling?) attitude now - we know best, we are your teachers. Where has listening to the big brain gone.?

This language never ceases to confuse! In other circumstances it is pronounced zhe, for example 顺着, 站着 etc. as far as I can see with the same function as indicating a continuous state, and playing a similar function to English ...ing
