May 24, 2008 at 7:18 AMreally it seems there must be something wrong today, even the Expansion doesn't work. eastcoastyankee, I had similar problem in the past: for a long time I was not able to understand how to download the Traditional PDF, that I had selected, and my thoughts seemed to follow the same misleading path... Inside the podcast 128k you have the text embedded (I guess is a metadata, but I'm not sure od this) and you can read for istance in iTunes, or on your iPod pushing several time the centrral button. Actually this is not the real PDF. You have to download it usually from the last link on the left side of the lesson page, just below the Fix one, or you can download from your home page: each of your bookmarked lesson has all the links active (depending on you type of subscription). The last way to get the PDF, and that's my recent discover (quite late indeed..) is this: having already set your preferences in "Your Feed" you can (or not) also decide to download the selected audio material, directly as a podcast, for istance on iTunes; well then you can click on that orange link, just beside, very close, on the right of "Your Feed" link (note that they are two distinct links). In this page you can see the list of your lessons, and you can subscribe to this feed. If you do so you will have in you browser your "feed" of ChinesePod-your username. If you you click on it you always have the updated full list of your bookmarked lessons, and your PDF, Traditional and/or Simplified; in effect that's simply the list of all direct link to all these features. Hope I could help you, and not to add more confusion in this day of bugs...

Andrea Bocelli, who certainly doesn't need my defense, is not a boy, even technically, he's a man, and, even though I am not a fan of his style, he fully deserves his fame as a singer, an Italian singer that put his roots in a tradition of a certain importance. "Con te partirò" is a quite well known Italian song, translated into the English version "Time To Say Goodbye" and become very famous 世界上. So thanks again to JP, who fairly reckons the truth. I am happy that you all dear friends are able to sing its melody, and that proves this song is very famous indeed. In the end, what I want to say now? Well, I'd like to see here some more... attention (a bit of reciprocal respect?) among friends, because I like to consider you all of the ChinesePod staff, a bit like my friends, and that's why I wanted to be very clear with you, exactly like friends do. ciao, Michele.

May 12, 2008 at 12:44 PMI'm afraid the problem could be worse than the single episode of the collapsed school (both confirmed or not). You only have to look at this map http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/pager/events/us/2008ryan/index.html#exposuremap and you can see by the estimated population risk how many people could be exposed to a severe risk. I can't even imagine what does it mean to be in a zone exposed to a X Mercalli.

May 12, 2008 at 11:01 AMyou can find a lot of data about the earthquake here: "http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008ryan.php#details" it seems it was a pretty heavy one, I'm afraid... even though no major cities are very close to the epicenter, I can read from this site some tens of thousands of people could be enough near to the epicenter to be exposed to some consequences. I'm deeply concerned about this, and I want to do my best wishes to all the possibly involved population, with a strong sense of friendship.

April 24, 2008 at 7:50 AMHi suntzu8, your idea seems to be a good one. The meaning of 前 and 后 using your "image of the diary" could be easier to grasp. I've never realised before that it's the same pattern one can use for 上 and 下. Actually, you can choose anything else having a similar structure, a column of many items, one put over each other, like a deck of playing cards, an old calendar, or a diary, like you say, and everyone of these examples seems to work pretty fine, in order to clarify this tricky issue. Everything it's OK, but, in the end, let me put a little bit of sand... in this perfect mechanism... why do 前途 (qián tú) means future? Dear friends, how I love studying Chinese!!

April 23, 2008 at 2:40 PMI guess there's a lot of useful images for an easier understanding of the 上 下 usage in time expressions, for istance, you can think to a deck of playing cards, if you're picking them one by one, the next one is just below, or even you can think to an old-type calendar. Actually, I agree with suntzu8, the Chinese traditional writing system seems to be very clear and helpful. And I have to admit that I find the same difficulties for 前 后. I know their meaning in time expressions, but if anyone has a good explainig image or concept it would be great to read here. Thank you in advance.
