The gobbledygook is HTML character references. For example, "ǎ" is the Unicode character for 3rd-tone a. That isn't the representation in the original MP3 as posted by Chinesepod on their website, but something either in their upload to ITunes must be converting it. Web pages understand character references, so when you paste it here it is converting it back. Technically that is a problem with the website. The cut-and-paste should remain exactly what you pasted, not turn it back into characters.

LostInAsia, what player are you using? I can read it just find in Windows Media Player 11 and I can extract the transcript to a text file. Also from a technical standpoint the file correctly follows the ID3v2.2 specification, with the one exception that it is using carriage returns for end-of-line instead of linefeeds as the spec calls out. That shouldn't affect the pinyin display.
