November 20, 2007 at 12:33 AMto zohar8353, The best for us is a cartoon that has been dubbed in Mandarin, like Shrek for example. Something you've already seen. Maybe there are other kid cartoons that are even simpler, but kids seem to use words we never learned in classes like animal names so we found that very frustrating in the beginning to know that Chinese kids had much bigger vocabularies than we did.

November 13, 2007 at 1:58 AMWhile waiting for Qing Wen to load on this hotel "fast internet service" we have to take exception to Dave. It's not that we love the rrrr sound, but it seems to us that many two and even three character words are pronounced as one syllable. For example November, Shi2 Yi4 Yue4 sounds to us almost like shweh. (Of course when we try to slur like that no Chinese knows what we're trying to say, but that happens even when we speak slowly. )

Back then we learned from the Waiban guy we called "the Golden Smoothie" to do exactly what you did--refuse to step out of line and tell everyone about the bad behavior, always with a smile as if it were a game, and yes, Li Hai is definitely a compliment. Congratulations!

After all the people who brought us Godzilla in Shanghai, Scary Clown and had Ninjas kill off poor Peter are at least going to have Wang Wei befriending Li Yan because he has designs on her best friend, or is hiding is sexual preference, or is using her respectablity to hide from Interpol.

October 30, 2007 at 2:53 PMLantian, Our moms gave us warm milk with sugar. Mmmmm. We even got warm lemonade. But then, our moms may be older than yours. 刚跑步后在喝冰水一定害肚子疼。Right after running, drinking ice water (or Gatorade) does make my stomach hurt. Grandma isn't all wrong.

December 22, 2007 at 2:35 AMIn the vocab section 劝 is pronounced chwan4 instead of chwen. But in other places 全 and other words with the same "QUAN" pinyin are pronounced chwen. So is this a regional difference, or a special variant? Would whoever said ( Is it you, Connie?) "chwan4 jiu3" also say "chwan2 qiu2"? (I'm using bad pinyin to emphasize the difference.) Maybe "urge to drink" has a special pronunciation to emphasize that the speaker might be drunk???
