May 6, 2008 at 11:59 AMComments: měi ge rén - When I heard this in the dialogue, my first thought was that she was speaking about Americans. Did anyone else think that? Or is it just my silly ears? In the banter, (at about time index 5:55) Jenny says "duì de" or something like that.. I know that duì.. but I have never heard a particle used with it before. Is there a reason she said that? Other than that.. a great lesson. I'll definitely be listening to this one a few times.

May 6, 2008 at 8:10 AMI'm not sure how I missed this lesson up until now.. I guess that's the thing about cPOD.. there are just so many lessons, and you don't have to listen to them in any order... Anyway.. so I was on the train station waiting for a train today, as you do, and I saw a particularly beautiful Chinese girl and I was trying to internalise what I would say to say "She is very beautiful".. I assume then, that I would say: 她是很美丽。(tā shì hěn měili) (tah shir hun may-lee) I assume that pretty is not beautiful? Beautiful is on a higher level of "looks"? Or are they interchangeable with identical meanings?

May 6, 2008 at 7:49 AMYeh there was a nursery rhyme or story when I was a kid that had a mouse who lived in a shoe. I wasn't traumatised by it though.. I can easily understand why Dr Seuss books could be scary.. they are just a little too strange for some people... alien-like.

May 5, 2008 at 11:21 AMI can only assume, tthy2802, that they are speaking in different dialects. The 3 main ones in mainland China are: Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese. Then you have the accents as well.. So you have the Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwanese etc accents as well..
