December 5, 2010 at 1:44 PMYes.. we need a lesson on picking up in Chinese :) I think it would be fun! :) I'm sure it could be quite cultural too as I have seen some odd "pick up lines" in phrase guides.. for example, "You look like my cousin.".. not sure if that is a true pickup line or not.. but it wouldn't go down too well in Australia :) lol

December 4, 2010 at 8:24 AMSomething I find I do a lot is over-think, trying to find some extra or subtle meaning in two different words that essentially mean the same thing. At the level that the vast majority of us will be communicating, I think that the most commonly used expressions are the ones to use and not to get caught up on the subtle differences. We naturally try to find these subtle meanings so we can categorise the words into our internal dictionaries of course so it is hard to switch this off.
As you pointed out, there is definitely a clear distinction between possible and probable but you could use both interchangeably in all but the most high level conversations.

December 4, 2010 at 3:30 AMI dunno if there is a difference but I have also learned to say/use 百分之#.. so I am going to stick with that.. :) the 分之 chunk seems very common when talking about fractions and the like.. as it itself means "fraction of".
百分之一 1%, 百分之四十四 44% and so on
Of course then you have 二分之一 for Half or 50%.. and then 三分之一 for one third.. and 四分之三 for three quarters or 75%.. that chunk gets used constantly. And then you have 百分之百 which, just like in English, has not only the meaning of 100% but also the lateral meaning of "absolutely"..
So.. I would be going with the 分之 chunk for the sake of keeping everything nicely packaged :)

December 3, 2010 at 4:20 PMWhen I was in Hangzhou for the first time, it was also my first time to ride a bicycle (unpowered) in China. I found it to be a very empowering experience to ride around anywhere and everywhere instead of being forced to use buses or taxis, or walking etc. :) I would never ride a bicycle in Shanghai though.. lol.. well maybe not never.. but it's just too crazy :)
After riding all over the place in Hangzhou I can understand the desire to have an electric powered bike.. :)

December 6, 2010 at 1:06 AMTo answer the original question though.. what I find beautiful is not just about the physical appearance. There is also an inherent cuteness/beauty inside some of ladies I have met in China. It's about their personality, as corny as that sounds, and I find that many of the Chinese ladies I tend to get along well with are very "bubbly", that is.. cute.
Once this quality of cuteness has been established, they immediately become a lot more attractive to me, even physically... so I don't think that it is as important to have a round face, big eyes and pale skin to be attractive, as it is to have a great personality and good heart.
It certainly doesn't hurt mind.. but it's far from being essential!
