February 15, 2008 at 11:44 AMUser21573, Umm, umm! Gree'its remind me of gramma's cookin'. It's pronounced that way because you always smile when she brings them out. The northerners just look at me funny when I try to describe 'em. So, I tell them they are something like "cream of wheat" (gag me).

February 7, 2008 at 11:33 AMAnd I hope everyone noticed John's extra emphasis on zai4jian4. If you listen to enough of the the newbie and ele lessons, you can practice it in unison with Ken and Jennie at the end of each and get your 4th tone fix. 新年快乐!

February 5, 2008 at 12:47 PM我到底爱不爱你们吗?让我考虑一下。 开玩笑。 Dao4di3 is a great word. I'd like to understand it better. Can I use it with wo3? For example, Wo3 dao4di3 xiang3 zhege bu hao3 kan4. 我到底想这个不好看。 (trying to say) "Actually, I think it looks bad."

February 3, 2008 at 10:39 PMHere's an example of two tones that use to drive me crazy. Try something like jiu3 shi2 (90). Say jiu3 (9) then shi2 (10) then jiu3shi2 (90). Though still the same tones, when run together, they just sound different, like the 2nd tone picks up where the 3rd tone ends and like the 3rd tone ends early, just slightly beyond the low point.

December 14, 2007 at 12:48 PMInterstate 10 runs from northern Florida (Jacksonville maybe?) to Los Angelas. While interstate 4 runs from middle to northern Florida to Tampa. They don't meet or cross, so my guess on the location (if its not in Florida) is its in a theme park somewhere.

July 22, 2007 at 12:05 PMExcuter, I heard in one Cpodcast that 好(hao3) is being used more and more in place of very. They said it was common in Taiwan to use it this way and that it was catching on on the mainland. They attribute it to the fact that languages change over time. That makes sense to me, since every year, the dictionary publishers are updating their wares.

April 6, 2008 at 4:37 AMI've never had the opportunity to visit Detroit. The closest I've come it to pass through/by on the freeway. But, my vote for the most depressing city is Cincinnati. Its the only place on earth where all the motels have perpetual "no vacancy" signs up, as if to say to the tired traveller, "go away". 窝说的是事实。
