Sorry, Henning, I don't understand what you mean by "blanks".  ?????  Do you mean spaces between characters?

The characters and pronunciation are different for 哈欠 (ha1qian) and 呵欠(he1qian)。

Hi Amber,

One of my dictionaries agrees that 打 哈欠 means "to yawn", but another has "打呵欠”。 Are both right?

Lester, I'm not sure if it's common to run to the bathroom to cry -- it might be, since doing so would save some face. But -- you asked "is it common to run to the bathroom to BALL". Ha ha! You really meant to say BAWL since the verb "to ball" is English slang for (hold your breath) sexual intercourse! A small mistake, but in this context, it's hilarious.

My most horrifying toilet experience was in a very small villiage in the countryside. The toilet was in the house, a typical concrete squatter, terrible smell, etc. While squatting there, I heard a strange sound from the other side of the low wall beside me. When I stood up, I peered over: there were two enormous pigs! Yikes! My best toilet experience was in a monastery on a mountainside in Tibet. The toilet was in a large, cold cement room. Right beside the squatter, was a window from which I had the most amazing view of cloud misted mountains. Beautiful!

I agree about the music -- it's a bit distracting!

In the expansion sentences, why is jia(4) in the sentence: 他们刚超 完 架 就马上和好了。

One point of interest is that Vancouver's Chinatown is the second largest in North America. San Francisco is larger.

Lantian: I agree Vancouver is cloudy at times, but "quiet and sleepy"? When did you last visit there?

加拿大 is sometimes fondly referred to by those of us familiar with the country's many social "benefits" as 大家拿! Seriously, I think many Chinese want to come here because they already have family/friends in Canada, and because it really is a pretty good place to live.
