Yes I meant characters as in hanzi but used an example with people because I thought it was more common.

Connaitre and reconnaitre are indeed applicable to characters :

connaitre quelqu'un = to know someone = 认识一个人

reconnaitre quelqu'un = to recognize someone = 认出一个人

Apparently, it's possible to dry the ocean of the heart (擦干心海) but not the ocean of the brain (擦干脑海). I wonder what makes the mind so "desiccant proof".
