I can't agree about PlecoDict being a solution - no mac or ipod versions available. Also - not particularly cheap. I would love to see a stronger flash card solution for ChinesePod though.

On my very first trip to Taipei my agent put me and a coworker in a taxi to the hotel. We did not notice that she paid the driver to take us. When we got to the hotel we tried to pay the driver but he kept refusing to take our money. We finally figured out that he had already been paid. This never would have happened in NYC!

Almost all of my China contacts I use 88 to sign off of online chat because ba ba sounds like bye bye.

Cassie - Yankee Doodle is actually from our Revolutionary War in the 1700's. I don't think you could find too many Americans who could explain what the song means today. The lyrics to the chorus are:

Yankee Doodle keep it up,Yankee Doodle dandy,Mind the music and the step,And with the girls be handy.
And there we saw a thousand menAs rich as Squire David,And what they wasted every day,I wish it could be saved.

My agent in Taipei put me and a co-worker in a cab after dinner one evening. We did not notice that she also paid the driver to take us back to the hotel. When we got to the hotel and tried to pay the driver he refused - it took a minute of sign language and gestures before we realized he had already been paid - has to be my best experience with a cab driver ever!

In general I find the cab drivers in Taipei to be honest and excellent.

Thanks for the lesson. My last time in Taipei the clerk at the 7-11 was asking me if I wanted a bag and I had no idea what she was trying to tell me.

I would also highly recommend Peter Hessler's first book, River Town. This memoir reflects on his experiences teaching English in China. It is an often funny, sometimes tragic, but always fascinating look at China from a westerner's point of view. Peter's wife, Leslie Chang, has written a book called Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China that is on my short list.

I wish I could afford the executive plan subscription - I would love to talk to Vera everyday. Of course we would probably spend most of our time talking about World of Warcraft.

I must say I enjoy all of the hosts on Chinesepod. I often find that I turn to Ken's pronunciation for clarity - so keep up the good work Ken! I love Jenny's voice, John is super, Pete is a great new addition and Amber is just absolutely awesome - but I must say that Connie has the sweetest most beautiful voice! I could listen to her talk all day.

I love Chinesepod and I've found it a great supplement to my regular lessons.
