我家五口人, 我,太太, 大儿子,中儿子,小儿子  I'm not sure that's the right way to refer to my middle son or not.

The ri sound still gives me trouble, and when speaking quickly I don't think I differentiate my zi and ci sounds well enough. Being able to hear a variety of speakers make these sounds was of great help.

This is a very timely episode for me. My wife bought me an electric steam boat for my birthday (last Saturday). We had a great huo guo meal with the kids that night. Chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu and tons of vegetables. Reminded me of the great hot pot dinners I have had in Hong Kong and Beijing.

June 4, 2009 at 1:10 AM

Three years ago I started traveling to China a couple of times a year for work. Since everyone I work with there speaks English I didn't feel compelled to learn any more than the bare basics. But the more I went the sillier I felt that I couldn't communicate with many of the people I came in contact with outside of work. I started with ChinesePod and followed that up with some night classes at a nearby University, (through the Confucius Institute). I was not prepared for the enthusiasm my desire to learn the language generated in my agents and vendors in China. My desire to learn, certainly not my skill, has opened up so many opportunities to interact on a much more personal level. It has become one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. On a more humorous note, it is lots of fun to see the shocked expression on a face when you surprise them with 你叫什么名字!

On some of my trips to China I have a couple of women with me who refuse to use the squat toilets available at some of the factories. Our agents have become very adept at notifying them to use the facilities "here" because the "next" ones are not acceptable.

PlecoDict does look like a great tool but according to their website it is currently in "development" for the iphone (which is what I have) and for macs. If it does come out I'll give it a try.

"Other Platforms: An iPhone / iPod Touch version of Pleco is in development, but we're not yet ready to announce a release date for it, nor do we have any information about features / pricing / upgrade policies on iPhone."
