July 8, 2013 at 2:44 PMThis 了 is a perfective aspect marker rather than a tense marker. As such, it marks verbs when they refer to a single completed (not ongoing) event. In the vast majority of cases, when we're talking about a completed event, we're talking about something in the past, so it's safe to translate this 了 with the English past tense 99 percent of the time. However, it is possible to view things as single, completed events in the future as well, and that's what's happening in this case. The 离开 referred to in the first clause could only happen after the 背叛 had already occurred in the future.
了，of course, does have a double life as a marker of change of state, but if I were analyzing this as a problem in a syntax or semantics class, I would guess that it's the perfective marker rather than the change-of-state particle. Anyhow, I think the change-of-state 了 (almost?) always occurs at the end of the clause, whereas the perfective marker can occur there or directly after the verb. I'm open to correction on absolutely all of this.
