I remember my first Chinese friend, an old man from Hunan (who moved here in Canada years ago), he kept reading the word 花 (hua1 - flower) in "fa" I was saying "no no, it is HUA" and he was repeating "FA"! Then, finally his wife from Beijing was there the next week and... she told me "He doesn't speak good Chinese, I DO, I'm from Beijing!" ah ah!
Sometimes (weeks later), they were arguing while teaching me and after few months... I was understanding! Once I told them, and they were so shy! ah ah!! ;-)

April 22, 2008 at 3:34 PMWOW! Thank you ChinesePod for this very useful lesson! An old Chinese couple help me every Saturday to learn Mandarin, the lady is from Beijing (so lots of 儿) and he is from Hunan, so... lots of "F" instead of "H" and "L" instead of "N". I remember my first time listening to him, I thought he was speaking a complete different dialect. I got used to it, Very funny especially when he pronounces 花 (hua1). So, keep up your good work ! Thanks
