June 1, 2012 at 6:49 AMcongratulations to your wife and yourself, John.I didn't know you recently became a father! Life goes on!
In the expansion you gave us the example of: 每天我带孩子měi tiān1 wǒ dài hǎi zi. this 带孩子 seems a bit different from 照顾 孩子zhào gù hǎi zi or 照料孩子 zhào liào hǎi zi. Does 带 in this context rather mean 'to raise' and the latter 照顾/照料 to look after/ to attend?

there is an older quite interesting QW „Must-Have Modals“ (QW0148) dealing with some modal verbs like
got to, must, should, have to
i.e. 要 yào, 一定要 yīdìngyào, 需要 xūyào, 得 děi, 必须 bìxū,应该 yinggāi,该 gāi

April 14, 2012 at 9:39 AMThere is an older QW 0114 : How to Say "and" in Chinese , where you will find still more entrances like: 还,还有,也,一边..一边,又..又,in another context.

August 17, 2012 at 1:23 PMhi John,
while drilling my chinese prosody according to your most valuable hints about pronunciation at your sinosplice website I realize, that one of my big problem consists in "unlearning" the prosody of my native tongue. Any ideas of this aspect? This might interest other Poddies as well.
