The Economist had an article that described Freddie and Fannie and the bail out as capitalism at its worst / 资本主义最失败(fail)的案例(case)。Sadly, we are seeing yet some more this week.

我这个人说话比较直接 is 'I'm a straight talker'. But if you are asking word for word translation, it would be 'my talking is quite direct'. The expression 我这个人 is often used when highlighting a personal attribute. For example, 我这个人爱说话/I'm very talkative.
Innovation is 创新/chuang4 xin1. Creativity is 创意/chuang4 yi4. Sometimes, they are used interchangeablly, per example today's lesson.

The word for innovation is 创新/chuang4 xin1. 创 means to create. 新, new.Thus innovation is 'create the new'. Makes good sense, doesn't it? But it is a a somewhat new word (maybe been around for less than 10n years), eventhough China was a rather innovative society back in old times.
"Technology Innovation" is 科技创新/ke1 ji4 chuang4 xin1. "the role of Innovation in society"is 创新在社会的位置/chuang4 xin1 zai4 she4 hui4 de wei4 zhi4. The buzzword in China is 创新型社会/innovative society, a goal that China hopes to achieve.

It feels almost magical and certainly rewarding when you start to connect the dots in the language that you are learning. I still constantly feel it with English. But with Chinese, I think the links are even more prominent because of the structure of the language. 出口/chu1 kou3 is a great example. The word for 'going out' and 'mouth' makes up 'export'

“得” /dei 3 means 'need' or 'should'（a strong should). For example,
我周末得加班。/wo3 zhou1 mo4 dei3 jia1 ban1./I need to work overtime on the weekend.
你得吃早饭。/ni3 dei3 chi1 zao3 fan4. /You should eat breakfast.
得 is used more often in the north. In the south, people are more prone to use “要”。

You are close. A more idiomatic expression would be “如果你认为你了解所有的事，那你大概还没看足够的书” or “那你还有很多不了解”。

竞争/ jing4 zheng1 means competition, but in the abstract sense, not a real match. 比赛/bi3 sai4 however means a real match, mostly in sports.
家的日子/jia1 de ri4 zi means the livelihood of a family/household, in the sense of living standard.
