September 23, 2007 at 5:33 PMAs an undergraduate a while ago, a friend invited me to a new student club--The Hong Kong Club. At their first meeting, although we spoke English, there were about 50 Canonese speakers and myself. (Perhaps I was just there for the diversity.) I met one guy from HK who said he could tell by anyone's accent where they were from, but my accent confused him. He refused to believe me that I was born and raised in California and couldn't understand why I wouldn't admit to being raised overseas. It became very ackward.
