I can relate to that too! Playing Mahjong (the southern Sichuan version. I mention that since it seems the "gambling rules" change between villages in a 50km radius!!) did help me a lot when I first met my (Chinese) wife's family. Very basic chinese but good mahjong skills got me in very easily!

Spring festival is the time of year I play most! A regular day looks like this: eat (lots), mahjong (lots), TV(lots) and also lots of this very popular card game down here 斗地租 "doudizu" (Ithink), sometimes translated "Fight against the landlord"!!

There's nothing like a mahjong game and a cup of green tea in the courtyard!

Hi Shanghai rocks! Yep, that's right, on MSN, Skype or QQ, one of the options (online, do not disturb, away...) is 离开 which is the translation for "Away."

But, when you are telling your friends that you are now leaving and will not continue chatting (!) with them, then, I would say, you should type:

我走了!- wo3zou3le!

Hope it helps!

好!我也走了!再见!

Hello Bill! Thanks for this expression! As soon as I read your post, I tried it with a Chinese friend (here in Sichuan) and they say something slightly different but also interesting: 我去梦周公!

wo3 qu2 meng2 zhou1 gong1.

Thanks Grace! But can't you say that you wish a beautiful day to someone? I just wanted to change a little bit from the usual 快乐 version?
