November 18, 2007 at 12:01 PMThe age span here is indeed facinating and definately one of the major assets of this community 16-88. That means we have 3 collaborating generations. Auntie, according to my wife the equivalent term for a young (unmarried) woman is: 大姑娘 dà gū niang

November 16, 2007 at 5:04 PMdict.cn says: preventive 预防的 preventative 预防性的 and thereby supports Ron's distinction (there is already a 性 in preventative). BTW: Its easier in German. Both words are translated with "präventiv". Oh and in English there also is "preemptive" but that seems to have a more active connotation and I do not find a translation for that one.

November 16, 2007 at 4:44 PMCool discussion. Merriam-Webster knows both: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=preventative http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/preventive According to that source "preventative" is indeed rather young. While for "preventive" the date 1639 is given, it is only 1666 for "preventative".

November 16, 2007 at 10:34 AMBut the interesting point is: Nudity is not a point in China. But they are extremely shy (up to the point of being totally appalled) regarding everything related to sexual behaviour. I have my untested little theory that this, but this led to endless fierce discussions before. :)
