Pete,
there is almost always a price for luck. And let's just say that getting this type of position was imperative for my family.

I have indeed seen the safety nets of the German system in action several times now and I don't want to trade with the US or the worst case - China. Shit happens.

However, you can easily watch the downsides of this system as well. I guess the trick is to find a balance between keeping personal responsibility and competition based incentives alive while at the same time securing that those nets stay strong (And you have to be careful not to judge the system based on a few weasels who are very adept at misusing them - those characters will exploit any system anywhere).

suburbanite,
Ele-Thursday.

Don't forget that "News and Features" brings in a more warmth and personal touch than an Email. And it also often includes elements like interviews and community developments that have formerly found their home in the "Saturday Show" and later "Dear Amber".

And I really do like the jingle.

Oh, I love the "News and Features".

But I am with those who plead for a fixed schedule. Since we have 5 days with 5 levels anyways since quite a while now: Why not make "Monday the Newbie day", "Tuesday the Advanced/Media day", "Wednesday the Intermediate", "Thursday the UI day", and "Friday the UI day"?

RJ,
no, it is (used to be) unique to the public sector - Universities included.

Recently, however, the system has been changed: new positions are supposedly more performance based (and come with a significant decrease in salary). I was lucky to get one of those rare positions that follow the old model...

I felt a little awkward when Pete and Jenny explained 工龄 and how it is an old concept from socialistic times...

A significant part of my salary is determined by my 工龄 ("Dienstalter") or to be more precise: by my 工龄级 ("Dienstaltersstufe"). The rest comes from natural age, academic degree, working location, and family size. Performance? What performance?

All the best from an oasis of socialism! :P

Interesting idea to connect the two series.

Although there are still some threads open in the regular 老王-line, e.g. the further legal proceedings, his chicken-import-business, his headhunting activities in the old team...

Seems that we now got 10 new magical creatures in China, called the 百度十大神兽, the most famous being the grass mud horse. Look it up in Wikipedia (I won't add a link - too risky).

:)

Audio or video?

changye,
we were not surprised because of the word "imaginary" but because 龟 made it to the list.

It is like "The famous four presidents: 胡锦涛, president of China, Obama, president of the US, Medvedev, president of Russia, and Krause, president of the Cologne Lego Club."
