paulinurus,

Believe it or not, these "specialized" topics can actually be very useful, too.  In my time here in China, I've actually had many conversations about eating dog, abortion, and capital punishment.  In many of those conversations, though, I lacked the kind of upper-intermediate language that was needed to really get in depth.

If you're concerned about everyday topics, you might even try out some of this language.  As others have said, these lessons are useful to get a sense of how locals really talk about these issues, but an even better way to absord that cultural knowledge is to ahead and try out this the lessons' language with some locals.  As you speak, they might teach you a thing or two.

My friends and I used to joke around a lot about zombies back when I was in the States, and we'd argue about zombie defense plans: who had the safest house, which stores would offer the best supplies, etc.  Now, maybe I annoy my Chinese coworkers with this same kind of banter!
