March 19, 2010 at 10:43 AMLets see how many of you Yanks know the correct answer to the old chestnut:
Other than a base hit, what are the 7 ways a batter can reach first base?
In order to get a definitive answer, the question must be interpreted in the way it was originally intended.

March 19, 2010 at 8:44 AMI don't know the statistics, but I would say that more than 50% of English vocabulary consists of words borrowed since the Anglo-Saxon invasion of England. The only saving grace is that the most commonly used words are of Anglo-Saxon origin - I seem to recall that 96 of the 100 most commonly used English words are Anglo-Saxon. Without this, it would be hard to describe English as a Germanic language.

March 17, 2010 at 9:08 PMIt seems, on checking a dictionary, that I am wrong about that, so xiao_liang's question still stands.

March 17, 2010 at 8:35 PM要 doesn't mean 'need'. It means 'want', 'must', 'will', but not 'need'.

March 19, 2010 at 11:50 AMDo you think we'd offend the Yanks if we called them Seppos?
Anyway, to give a hint: A particular official in a baseball game should know the answer, otherwise he doesn't know his job.
And its not a trick question. Its just that most people don't interpret it correctly (possibly because its never asked correctly, and I am guilty here too).
