January 26, 2013 at 3:59 PMTal, I think you mean homophobia, not xenophobia. The latter is more sociological and anthropological and for the most part, marriage for many societies is still traditionally defined as between a man and a woman, a man and 2 or more women, or a woman and 2 or more men.
If you mean I fear that gay and lesbian culture will dominate the US I will tell you outright that this is not going to happen. This is a pluralistic society and there are many groups (including religious) clamoring for their rights. They form activist groups, hire lawyers, talk to the media and go to the capital of their state or Washington DC to lobby.
My prediction is Legalized Gay Marriage will become more and more common. For one thing, money talks. There was a Gay Day Parade in Disney, Orlando, Florida one or two years back and this brought in millions of dollars to the Tourist & Hospitality Industry within a week. This is huge for an economically depressed state.
I had gay friends before my religious conversion and there was a Chinese gay man who showed an interest in me (that's another story). I am really cool with them but as a Catholic, I am concerned for the spiritual lives of my nephews (yes, more than one) and I will continue to pray for them.

January 25, 2013 at 2:10 PMkdogg36, it matters to me because as a heterosexual marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman and all the responsibilities that go with it.
kdogg36 you could create a new legal framework and I do not really care what you do. And if I understand it correctly, the gays in the US are very influential in the movie film industry and many are very successful professionals. I have no doubt that you can achieve this easily and with fewer objections from the public. My point is, in all this flurry about equality, people forget that heterosexual has rights too and could be discriminated against, and some people do value tradition. I see this an an infringement against my belief.
Sorry kdogg36, there are things that I do not want to say to make nice to people, so I have to respectfully disagree with you. And as a catholic, I do not like to judge. Ultimately what is good or bad is not my call and we all have to make our choices in life and make peace with our maker.
By the way, my nephew and his partner are coming from the Philippines to visit us in Orlando. We will have dinner together. They are both good people and very accomplished and I am very proud of him.

January 25, 2013 at 2:13 AMMy understanding of marriage is between a man and a woman. I understand that same-sex couples are given the same benefits and rights of a marriage in domestic partnership. Why so much fuss about being called a marriage like the heterosexual? Is this about civil rights, social acceptance or moral issues?

January 26, 2013 at 4:55 PMBy the way, the Catholic Church is stern on the morality of human sexuality, not on gays. This includes divorce, the use of contraception (even in a marriage), in vitro fertilization etc. All catholics struggle with these issues in one way or another...
