Having studied both traditional and simplified characters I'd say the simplified are much easier to learn and more practical when writing by hand. I also think it's ridiculous to suggest they are a Western construction--the last time I checked they were a Chinese invention.

I absolutely love the format of this lesson. I wish the newer ones followed this format but increased in complexity.
