May 20, 2008 at 4:32 PM@light487: it is 儿 (ér) and is also used in 儿子 (érzi) and 儿童 (értóng) which mean 'son' and 'children'. The basic meaning of 儿 is son, young or child, but it is also used as a suffix in nouns. The dialect of Beijing uses this 儿-suffix quite a lot, so when you hear a lot 'er, er, er' you are probably listening to a 北京人.

May 20, 2008 at 4:23 PMWhen I was in Xinjiang I could communicate quite easily with the locals in Chinese. I guess because they don't speak Chinsese as their first language either, so they don't use diffucult patterns or words and have quite a standard pronunciation. The accent in this 对话 is quite soft, I think. Travelling through China you wil have more problems with accents of different regions.

March 19, 2008 at 6:23 PMI thought it had to be 我去公司那里 and not 我去公司. Or is this only when people are involved, like 我去我朋友那里? Doesn't 过 mean something like 'once' 我去过银行3次 means in my whole life 'I went 3 times to a bank‘. 我去了银行3次 means 'I went to the bank 3 times (today, this week)

February 18, 2008 at 12:24 PMI have to agree with the Taiwanese in the dialoge: the simplified character structure is sometimes destroyed and some simplified characters don't look right, like like 厂 or 广. The Japanese simplication for 广 looks better, in my opinion. The origanal is 廠 and in Japanese the 敞 is replaced by ㄙ. This looks more balanced.

January 14, 2008 at 3:01 PMWhen I started studying Chinese I sometimes encountered texts about the People Army liberating the masses. Or about the political consequences of Hong Kong returning to the motherland China. So I am quite glad with the texts here on Chinesepod with topics like Hollywood movies or going out to chase girls. It makes studying Chinese a more natural.

January 11, 2008 at 9:29 PMBut don't let this keep you from going to China. 1st: you will get used to the more unpleasant aspects of China quite quickly (really) 2nd: there are a lot of restaurants, fast food places and hotel where you can find clean toilets.

January 11, 2008 at 9:27 PMBelieve me: in China you will prefer the squatting ones over the sitting ones. Most toilets are so gross that your happy that you don't have to touch anything with any part of your body. (don't wear flipflops, by the way). I once saw a beautiful marble public toilet. Well, it once was beautiful, but because nobody flushed, the **** was pilling up higher than the toilet..
