Interesting, I was always wondering about the English spelling of Shanxi and Shaanxi. I guessed it had something to do with the 3'rd tone. According to the above wiki page, a double vowel helped indicate a syllable with a 3'rd tone.

Jenny/Connie:

Just curious, if you learn pinyin in elementary school, when do you learn the Roman alphabet? It would seem you would have to learn that first??

BTW, great lesson! It is good to know I need to especially concentrate on getting the tones correct.

In Guangzhou a few years back, one of my native Chinese colleagues from that area would call the waitresses, 'liang nu' (亮女??) I think. Also xiao jie (小姐) was very common as well, no negative connotations.

How about something more positive like "I'm dating her" or "I'm in a relationship with her"? 跟她一起谈恋爱 Gēn tā yīqǐ tán liàn'ài?? ^-^

thanks, I was wondering what the distinction was between '司机' and '师傅'.

So '师傅' when addressing taxi drivers and '司机' for drivers of private or company cars?  Is this correct?

Hmm, is '一点儿' more of a Northern China phrase? It seem when I travel to Shenzhen or GuangZhou it is not so common and people look at you a bit funny.
