February 1, 2008 at 6:29 PMI have begun listening to the intermediate lessons over the past 3 mo. and I have to say that this is the best fun I have had in years. Jenny and John are a perfect duo giving us lots of juicy information and cultural insight but with a humors twist now and then. Jennny's singing was great and John's dry subtle humor fits perfectly with my concept of how this should all work together to make each lesson memorable and current. Keep up the great work both of you!!!

January 14, 2008 at 6:25 PMAn interesting lesson might be different names Chinese have for various types of people or occupations. For example at a restaurant you can call the waitress or 服务员 or 小姐 but a Chinese friend of mine told me that Chinese people never call a waitress 小姐 because it can also mean hoar, however, foreign people can get away with it. So is this true? Then you can call the cab driver 师傅 but would a street sweeper qualify for that name? Just a thought here.

December 21, 2007 at 4:18 PMI think Chinese pod should be listed as a class II narcotic. It is highly addictive and one needs to needs to be careful that it does not become an all consuming passion. I come here daily for my fix and I can't stop myself.

December 19, 2007 at 3:36 PMAnother suggestion for a lesson. Can you discuss 就. The dictionary says it can mean then,only or regarding and it can be coupled with other words. It always confuses me. Maybe there was already a lesson on this and I missed it.

December 6, 2007 at 6:51 PMOK, after a year and a half at this I finally made the jump from the comfortable confines of “elementary” to the dark and forbidding “intermediate” lessons and I am pleasantly surprised. When I don't understand everything Jenny is saying John’s comments keep me on tract. Plus, the more times I listen to the lesson the more I pick up. This is great! Now I get to hear more Chinese in a single lesson and I am pushed to work harder to understand the material. When I am listening to Jenny talking it sometimes sounds like gibberish at first, then all of a sudden the meaning pops through. This happens more and more as time goes on. Hopefully it means I am learning somthing. It really is better than any game because in the end I understand a new language, I can communicate with my Chinese friends on a new level and the depth of the Chinese culture comes into view in a way that exceeds anything I can read in English. Oh, well, enough of that. Chris

February 20, 2008 at 4:45 PMAmber: Thanks for the help but I am a little confused. I thought that 那个汤很烫。(Nàge tāng hěn tàng.) would translate "that is very (hěn) hot soup". If not why do I need 很?
