Jenny congratulations with you new show, I loved it!

In reaction to the interview, I do not think China is “hostile” at all. The longer I’m here and more I learn the more (universal) similarities there are I think.
If you ask me what it takes I would say: first Language! You need the language to understand the culture, without that you miss subtleties and cannot integrate (and do business) well.
Next, kindness, if you follow the Golden Rule you cannot go wrong anywhere even in China. I never met anyone who was offended by a smile. Also, I do not think you should adopt the local conditions too much, just be yourself and follow you inner compass. You will never be “one of them” anyway, so why not be yourself, that makes things much easier.
Third and last, humor, that will help you (and the other person/s) and put things in perspective and overcome issues.

I won’t get into details or start a discussion, but corruption is everywhere and you cannot avoid it always and sometimes it is even necessary or useful. I see China as a system and that system works rather well as a whole.

Just follow the one eyed Buddha, sometimes you look, sometimes you don’t. It’s not that difficult! There is no absolute truth anyway ;-).

Every night my 2 小猫 bring me either a big frog, bird or mouse as a gift. Sometimes they catch a big colourful butterfly and that bothers me a lot, since in Holland you only see them in a zoo. Luckily, they rarely kill the animal in question and I can set it free again, even mice ;-)

Loved this QW. This reminded me of something I noticed this week here in my laojia. The use of 酒家 for the local "Chinese" restaurant! Any thoughts on that? I noticed it being used for "Chinese" restaurants here (Holland) before. What is the difference compared to the other names mentioned in this QW? Is this just couleur locale?

Side note: when I was a child we often had family dinners here and I was fascinated by the new year calender, the aquarium, interior etc and dreamt of having the "traditional" lamp (maybe a bit tacky in retrospect). This is the place where I got the idea to eat my regular dinner at home with chopsticks (as a 7 year old!). Little did I know back then, that I would actually live in China some day and could actually buy the silly lamp myself, in Chinese, haha ! ;-)

I wonder what the correct measure word is for pearls or beads. Can I use 颗 or 粒 or both? And how do you say a "string" or "strand" of pearls / stones?

Maybe it is the holiday season? The lesson was very clear no questions here!

@blubberingfool, many users here are non-native English speakers ;-). If I speak for myself: even after 22 years of learning English,  I still learn new things (on Cpod)!
