September 11, 2010 at 4:28 AMYou know 花蜜 was my second choice (I was just guessing with 花迷, probably thinking in English too much, along the lines of 'a fan of flowers') - 花蜜 are very pretty characters.
I don't have a nickname :( . unless you count bodawei, which is my Chinese name and now appears on my local residency registration.

September 11, 2010 at 3:54 AMI understand perfectly, thanks. People used to say to me when I asked about 'le' that it is just 'for balance'. It just rolls off the tongue, and if the meaning is not changed by its addition then no harm done.

September 11, 2010 at 3:28 AMOh, Zhenlijiang - thanks a lot for alerting me to my error. I went straight to the exercises and didn't notice that. Indeed 看 has multiple meanings but I have never learnt to use it this way. So by making a boo boo I have learnt something!!
It is interesting (to me at least) that this 'depending on' meaning still has connotations of 'look at', eg. my dictionary has
明天是否去长城，完全得看天气了。
Another question - why the 了 here? :)

We do all our buying at one of the ubiquitous computer markets which contain dozens of individual businesses.
No I am not an Apple apostle I am more a heretic. :) I do have an iPod though and use iTunes. About half the extended family runs Macs - a family divided by brand.

Not sure if you can get an English version in China - have to ask a techie, my understanding is no. At least out where I live.
Do you think there is a big difference between Starter and um.. 'non-Starter'? I was told negligible/aesthetic difference.
英国的版本 yīngguó de bǎnběn (English version)
I am not sure about Ultimate etc. but those English words might be used by computer people.

七号 qīhào (7) - I am guessing there - they probably say 'seven' as well.

September 12, 2010 at 4:25 AMJohn, Jenny, this is a terrific little series. Even for those of us who have been using ChinesePod for some time this reminds you of all those things that you have forgotten, or never learned about ChinesePod the first time.
I have a question about the Lesson page. Below each lesson there is a little star icon and the words 'Bookmark this lesson'. Now the first 5 or 6 I looked at all go to my feed - so there is no need to bookmark the item.
Why can't the Lesson page indicate what has already been saved for learning? Such as 'included in feed'? In the dark recesses of my memory I thought it used to do this.
The only way I use 'Bookmark this lesson' is when I search the archive for something I need, and want to bring it to the top of my list or put it on my iPod.
The other related query is related to the fact that this current series is not in my feed. How do I get to see each one automatically? If I don't happen to go to the Lesson page to browse 'All Lessons' (or notice a comment on the Community page) I would miss these altogether.
Using the 'Latest' list on the Dashboard is a bit hit and miss - it only takes a little bit 乱说 going on (and I have nothing to do with that) for ten or twelve items to go up in quick succession and important stuff is lost for serious students. If they don't catch the minute or two 'window' during which their important stuff is on the board it is then lost. (Lost to the Community page, admittedly, for those alert poddies who use both the Dashboard and the Community page.) All of this would be worth explaining to new poddies.
I have always been a bit reluctant to use this little 'Bookmarked' etc. switch, never really understood all of its functions. Perhaps a lesson could be devoted to how to use this switch productively?
