oh yeah, thanks, 响鸣 should be 鸣响; I write these down when I get home an hour or two later after hearing them and my memory is not too good! 我猜错了。

在上海九一八空袭警报响了吗? (因为九一八事变)

Jason, do you have a 保姆 or 阿姨 or both? :) Does the 保姆买东西还有做饭?

I'll try not to let my envy get in the way of learning Chinese.

Hey, leave the 'breakfast gruel' alone, I like my 玉米糊, and 黄豆粉.

Yeah - I'm sure you're right, it is an East-West thing, and I'm sure that there are employers of maids and cleaners here. I'm guessing that at least the Maserati drivers have a maid.

在这里我当阿姨,

How common is this really?  I don't know a single person with an 阿姨.  I have never personally met an 阿姨.  Different circles?

Chinese families sometimes have an extended family member who is the 阿姨.

Sometimes people have an '阿姨' who does a couple of hours cleaning each week.

Hi lujiaojie

I was just given these as other uses of 鸣 -

空袭警报鸣了 kōngxí jǐngbào míng le (air raid siren sounded)

汽车喇叭鸣了 qìchē lǎba míng le (car horn blew)

Also, 响鸣 xiǎngmíng - can be used together to represent the sound of a siren?

maybe this is Yunnan useage?

thank you so much for the advice on 鸣 and 响 - I appreciate that. I try to be concious of the limitations of dictionaries but we learners have to rely on them quite a bit. My dictionary gives me writing practice though, that's a plus.

Jason - Rooster Crowing Temple - from a time when roosters were more respected? I have an idea you can't have them in Australia in most places because of the noise! But hens have made a comeback.

Hi shanghai_rocks

Ha ha - that photo is pretty good, but no, this was a regular looking (classic?) clock design. A quartz mechanism, nothing wrong with keeping time, but the rest of the mechanics and frame were fragile. Pretty styling. It cost about US$2. It didn't have a snooze but the alarm started quite soft and then got louder and louder and LOUDER.

The predecessor was German. A different level of quality. Actually - I just checked - it was about 27 years old when it gave up, I got it in '83.

Yeah, I really thought (like Baba elsewhere) that this was going to be a final kick in guts after last night's game. Rub it in, salt in the wound, 等等。

火上加油, 一再提及令人不快的事,令人伤心的事物。。
