hehe, I thought someone would call me on not mentioning Isle of Man and the Channel islands, but in my defense I was just discussing the countries, trying to get the big picture straight.

...yeah, I've had that impression too. I think more emphasis was put on it in the past.
"On letters addressed internationally, though, you would either use "UK" or the name of the specific country. "GB" would be weird"
yep, good point, usually "UK" in my experience
"sports where Ireland and Northern Ireland play together, I've never heard of such a thing"
...it's definitely the case in Rugby Union. Not sure about other international sports.
