Thanks.Actually I meant laughter, and so was trying to say that I wish you [all Poddies] lots of laughter [over Xmas] but I knew it would come out wrong, like this probably will:
祝大家哈哈大笑在圣诞节

December 23, 2008 at 1:13 AMThanks Calkins for the link from your vocab pic of the day group to this great lesson. It was so nice hearing the little girl speaking Mandarin.真的可爱,
圣诞老人今年我已经非常乖
Sophies world is a fabulous book:

So nice to hear you believe in 圣诞老人 Jenny. For the doubters out there amongst you ,Santa's existence is scientifically discussed here.
I recognised the 物 in 礼物 from 动物。Breaking it down it seems 物 just means thing,so that in the former word it means gift thing and in the latter it means moving thing [thus animal ].Interesting constructions of words yet again.

December 22, 2008 at 11:39 PMDon't you think the doctor was just being whollistic? I think it's important for the doctor to guage where the woman is at emotionally and psychologically, whether she's happy about being pregnant and what support she'll receive and see what support he can offer or arrange.I don't think doctors are there being judgemental but rather seeing what they can do to help.

December 22, 2008 at 5:13 AMJenny,
I wouldn't go so far as to call it a myth.I think it is pretty accepted that radiation can be a source of both cancers and birth defects. But I think the levels of radiation from both background cosmic radiation [except for very frequent air travellers] and even from computers and other electronic devices [which emit rf or electomagnetic radiation] are quite low. There has been a lot of concern about mobile phone usage, but my understanding is that this is not ionising radiation which is the radiation most linked with these risks. But as we don't know everything and these technologies are relatively new,it is understandable that people have these concerns and take these precautions.Fair enough, and interesting.I wonder if any other countries are adopting this practice.
Thanks obitoddkenobi for the pics. The one on the left looks somewhat similar to what would be found in a radiology department.I wonder if it contains lead and is as heavy. If this is what is typically worn,it would be a pretty obvious sign early on that someone is pregnant. Is the pic on the right also meant to represent a radiation proof outfit? It looks much more standard pregnancy attire.

Exactly right.Good points .No mention of alcohol either, but while much more important ,I'm guessing that sort of advice is more standard across cultures, whereas it's interesting to have these cultural insights in sofar as the differences are concerned.
weijin,
Thanks for explaining the Chinese viewpoint on this.
