February 7, 2013 at 5:12 AMThanks Helen [may I call you Helen?]
Did you get the sina weibo app with the grey background? ...as far as I can see it looks like the only difference between this and the one with the colour background [yellow or orange from memory] is that it has some English with it...or are there other differences. I take it you haven't had malware issues with either weibo or qq but with the latter it may be through lack of use as much as anything,...is that right? Any major reason you rarely use qq ? I could be wrong but it sounds to me like the verification thing is more for celebrities and the like so you know its really them, and it makes no difference for the rest of us then.
"I didn't have to go through the real name verification process"
...hmm, but your in China right? so used a chinese phone number right? ...I wonder how this works from outside china?

Thanks for all your helpful advice mate.
"Sina Weibo is ok. if you believe Trend Micro"
...well Im not sure exactly how this malware jumps on board [of course I'm aware of some ways like opening email attachments, downloading programs etc, but its the really sneaky stuff I'm not sure of], but I guess I wasn't so concerned about sina weibo itself but rather whether using it, it could be a channel for malware, wasn't very secure. So I'm not sure if Trend Micro is just checking the sina weibo website itself or user experience, how open to inadvertantly transferring malware.
"I wouldn't use QQ under any circumstances"
...Am I right in assuming that you mean because of a malware threat? I certainly was aware that it had a bad rep for malware and thus I was always reluctant to use it. Then they brought out an English version and CPod did a lesson on it a couple of years or so back it seems and seemed to be suggesting at that stage that they had cleaned up their act and it was safer. All the same I have been reluctant to use it in the end...I hate the thought of malware like anyone and didn't think it was worth the risk. Still, a couple more years down the track I'm wondering what the current status is. I'm very tempted to use it because when I was in China, of course they're not interested in facebook and the like, they want to know if you have a QQ account. Wondering also if the risk is platform dependent...safer on apple? how unsafe on windows?

February 7, 2013 at 2:17 AMthanks Pretz...yeah, windows 7 and have antivirus. So, how significant do you reckon the malware threat is using sina weibo these days [and what about qq while I'm at it?]....on iphone? on desktop windows 7 ?

February 7, 2013 at 1:11 AMoh, I also meant to ask, does anyone have an opinion on the risk of malware here? I'm guessing it's pretty low on an iphone, but what about using a windows desktop computer?

February 7, 2013 at 1:05 AMoh, also, iphone app wise there seems to be two versions. One has a yellow background and appears to be the Chinese language version and the other has a grey background and appears to be an English language version. The reviews on this grey background English language version are terrible...it sounds like it doesn't work in Australia. What's the experience of other Poddies using sina weibo? Any problems registering and using it outside China?

February 7, 2013 at 12:59 AMAlso, what's this verification programme/badge all about? is it necessary? I joined twitter years ago but have practically never used it since...it apparently also has this verification programme but I don't recall it...is it new there? necessary on twitter also?

haha, just when I was finally deciding to get up to speed on qq and weibo. Good to know. I've heard of wechat somehow but never looked into that one either. Looks like I better though, hehe. Thanks for the heads up :)
"it makes me feel like I'm trapped at the computer and can't leave easily "
...ah, youdaoli ..makes sense. yeah, I tend to agree with you. But what I'm most interested is the best way to keep in touch with Chinese friends and it seemed to me that qq was still more mentioned to me, but I wonder if the same folk are on weibo as well...if it's just as popular because I too prefer the sound of that and I also think it could be good chinese practice at the same time. But yeah, I'll look into this wechat too. You're in Shanghai though, right? I'm wondering if this wechat is china wide or more of a local phenomenon. Wondering if there's a big diff or not.
