December 3, 2010 at 11:57 PMI'm interested in the origin of this character 王。 If, in ancient times it was 皇帝 for emperor being used, was 王 a term that was introduced to describe foreign kings then?. I guess that would make it similar to the English word Emperor...no emperors in the English speaking world but used to describe ancient rulers in the East. ..Or was it used originally to describe more regional powers when the country had several kingdoms...or even just a few like in the 3 kingdoms period?
